Tips and detailed strategy

Peg Solitaire is a classic single-player puzzle dating back to the 17th century. The board is made up of 33 holes in a cross shape: 2×2 blocks have been removed from the four corners of a 7×7 grid. At the start every hole has a peg — only the centre hole is empty. To make a move, select a peg, then jump it over a horizontal or vertical neighbouring peg and land in the empty hole two squares away: the peg you jumped over is removed from the board. There are no diagonal jumps. The goal is to leave a single peg on the board; a "perfect" finish is when that last peg rests in the exact centre hole (the one that was empty at the start). Empty holes marked with a green ring are the valid jump targets for the peg you selected; a blue peg means it is selected. If no valid moves remain, a "stuck" screen appears. The U key undoes a move (and also dismisses the stuck screen) so you can try another route. The R key resets the board. Tip: rather than panicking on the early moves, it usually works out better to clear pegs from the edges instead of the centre; as long as the board stays symmetric, the solution path stays symmetric too.
