Torque (or moment) is a rotational force that causes angular acceleration. It equals force multiplied by the perpendicular distance (radius arm) from the axis: τ = F × r.

Why does distance matter in torque?

The further the force is applied from the axis, the greater the torque produced. A small force at a large distance can produce the same torque as a large force at a small distance.

What if force is not perpendicular?

If force is applied at an angle θ to the radius, multiply by sin(θ): τ = F × r × sin(θ).
